Quick facts
Stittsville sits about 20 km west of downtown Ottawa where Main Street meets Hazeldean and Carp Roads, southwest of Kanata. It became a Police Village in 1961, was folded back into Goulbourn Township government in 1974, and became part of the City of Ottawa when Goulbourn amalgamated in 2001. Subdivision building has barely paused since: Fairwinds, Poole Creek, Jackson Trails, Blackstone, Westwind and EdenWylde went up between the 1990s and the 2020s and carried the ward to 40,889 residents at the 2021 census. On those streets the work is basement finishes, kitchen and bathroom tear-outs, garage clearouts and landscaping, and a 10–14-yard walk-in bin goes straight onto the driveway, with a 20-yard for a whole-house renovation.
The old core is the exception — a short strip of Victorian-era and early-1900s cottages on small in-town lots that Heritage Ottawa walks visitors along. The frontages there are narrow, and a bin that will not fit beside the house has to go on the road, which needs a City permit arranged first. Running through the village is the former Canadian Pacific corridor, last used by a train on 14 January 1990 and now a stretch of the Trans-Canada Trail. For self-haul loads, the City's Trail Waste Facility Landfill at 4475 Trail Road is the closest public drop-off to the west end.

Out in the subdivisions the bin sits on your own driveway and no permit is needed. On the older Main Street lots, where frontages are tight, it may have to go on the road, boulevard or sidewalk — that requires a City of Ottawa Temporary Construction-Related Encroachment (TCE) permit first, under Road Activity By-law 2003-445, with a $101 application fee for a Simple permit covering up to 10 working days plus a per-day occupancy rental (minimum $41 a day). Apply ahead of delivery and confirm current fees with the City.
Questions
Not on a subdivision driveway — a bin kept entirely on your own property is free of City paperwork. If an older Main Street-area lot has no room and the bin goes on the road, boulevard or sidewalk, the City of Ottawa requires a Temporary Construction-Related Encroachment permit first ($101 for a Simple permit plus a per-day occupancy rental).
A 10–14-yard covers a basement finish, a kitchen tear-out or a garage clearout in the newer subdivisions; a whole-house renovation or a full move-out cleanout usually needs a 20-yard, and there is normally driveway room for one. On the older in-town lots, check the access first — an operator can confirm once they know the job.
