Renting a dumpster in Wortley Village? Old South's century-old grid was laid out before driveways were a given — the heritage district plan even directs where parking belongs — so placement is the first question here rather than an afterthought. Quick facts
Wortley Village is the shopfront spine of Old South, minutes south of downtown: restaurants and stores along Wortley Road, the Landon branch library, and the former London Normal School building, a historic teachers' college now serving as the YMCA's regional Southwestern Ontario headquarters. Old South was annexed to the city in 1890, and the streetscape you walk today was already recognisable by 1915, largely built out before the Second World War — small cottages through to substantial single-family houses, one to two and a half storeys, set back a uniform and shallow distance from the sidewalk on a grid of straight, linear streets. Housing that age keeps renovation crews busy year-round with plaster tear-out, kitchens, bathrooms, roofing and the occasional rear addition, and it is why compact 10–14-yard bins do most of the lifting in the village rather than the 20-yarders the suburbs favour. The neighbourhood turns out for Gathering on the Green and Wortley Pride on the Green each year.
The Wortley Village-Old South Heritage Conservation District was adopted by Council on 18 September 2014 and designated under Part V of the Ontario Heritage Act on 1 June 2015. Its boundary extends to Horton Street and Thames Park to the north, and on the east it jogs to take in properties fronting Ridout Street South from Ingleside Place to Elmwood Avenue East. The plan is unusually specific about where cars go: for new or replacement dwellings it directs parking "in the driveways at the side of the dwelling or in garages at the rear of the main building", which tells you how narrow these original lots really are. Plenty of the older houses have no true front driveway at all, so on-street parking is the norm and a bin here is likelier than in Byron or Hyde Park to need the City's occupancy permit. For small self-haul runs, the Oxford Street EnviroDepot at 1450 Oxford Street West is narrowly the closest, with the Clarke Road South EnviroDepot at 28 Clarke Road a comparable alternative.

Where a Wortley Village house has a usable side driveway or a rear garage — the arrangement the heritage district plan directs for parking — the bin can sit on private property and no permit applies. Many of these century lots have no front driveway at all, though, so street placement is common in the village, and that requires a Work Approval Permit (Occupancy) from the City's Public Property Compliance team (streetpermit@london.ca, 519-661-2489 ext. 2848) before the bin arrives. The City's 2026 fee schedule sets that permit at $300 flat for a boulevard placement of up to six months, or $50 per day for a bin in the travelled road itself. An operator used to heritage streets can advise on placement.
Questions
More often here than in London's postwar suburbs. If your house has a side driveway or a rear garage, the bin can stay on private property and needs no permit. If it has to sit on the road, sidewalk or boulevard — common on the older lots with no front driveway — you need a Work Approval Permit (Occupancy) from Public Property Compliance first (streetpermit@london.ca, 519-661-2489 ext. 2848). The 2026 fee is $300 flat for a boulevard placement (up to six months) or $50 per day for the travelled road.
A 10–14-yard bin is the practical size for most pre-war-house work here — a kitchen, a bathroom, plaster tear-out or a roof — and it is easier to place on a narrow lot or a short stretch of street than a 20-yard. Save the 20-yard for a full gut or a rear addition where there is genuinely room. An operator can confirm once they see the access.
