Quick facts
The crossroads at Richmond Street and Fanshawe Park Road began as McMartin's Corners around an 1820s inn and took the Masonville name in 1858, from Robert Mason's Mason House hotel. For a stretch it was better known as Calamity Corners — by 1935 the London Free Press was calling it the most deadly intersection in the region. The area was still largely rural when the city acquired it in 1961, and the neighbourhood as it stands took shape in the construction boom that followed Masonville Place opening on 2 January 1985. Inside its boundaries — Fanshawe Park Road to the north, Wonderland Road west, Richmond Street east and Windermere Road south — the housing is a genuine mix rather than a uniform detached suburb: pre-1985 single-detached homes form the base, with townhomes, apartment and condo buildings and purpose-built student housing layered on top, concentrated toward Western University along the southern edge. That gives two very different jobs: family renovations on the older streets, and fast end-of-tenancy clearouts near campus.
On the single-detached streets the answer is simple — the bin sits on the driveway and no permit is involved. Nearer the mall and toward Western it is not: apartment, condo and student buildings have no private driveway, so placement means either squaring it with building management or putting the bin on the road, and anything on a City street, sidewalk or boulevard needs a Work Approval Permit (Occupancy) from the City's Public Property Compliance team beforehand. Self-haul is a coin toss from here — the Oxford Street EnviroDepot at 1450 Oxford Street West and the Clarke Road North EnviroDepot at 21462 Clarke Road are about equally far from Masonville, and both take recyclables, yard waste, electronics and scrap metal.

Driveway placement on Masonville's detached streets needs no permit at all. Around Masonville Place and toward Western, where apartments, condos and student housing have no private driveway, the bin either goes where building management allows it or onto the road — and a bin on a City street, sidewalk or boulevard requires a Work Approval Permit (Occupancy) from London's Public Property Compliance team (streetpermit@london.ca, 519-661-2489 ext. 2848). Apply ahead of the delivery date — the City's 2026 fee schedule prices that permit at $300 flat for a boulevard placement of up to six months, or $50 per day for a bin in the travelled road itself.
Questions
Not on a detached home's own driveway. It is the apartment, condo and student-housing clusters near the mall and Western that need thought — with no private driveway, the placement has to be agreed with building management, and if the bin goes on a street, sidewalk or boulevard you need a Work Approval Permit (Occupancy) from Public Property Compliance (streetpermit@london.ca, 519-661-2489 ext. 2848). The 2026 fee is $300 flat for a boulevard placement (up to six months) or $50 per day for the travelled road.
For a student-house or apartment clearout, a 10-yard bin is often enough furniture and general waste for one unit, and a 14-yard covers a bigger emptying. Family renovation work on the detached streets — a kitchen, a basement, a roof — tends to land between 14 and 20 yards. Tell an operator the job and the access and they will confirm.
