Dumpster rental · Ontario
Renting a dumpster in Westdale? The 1920s Garden City streets here run right up against the McMaster campus — compact lots, single-car driveways or none at all, and heavy student-rental turnover — so curb space is usually what decides the bin. Quick facts
Westdale was laid out in the 1920s on Garden City lines in Hamilton's lower west end: curved, tree-lined streets radiating from the Westdale Village shops at King Street West and Sterling Street, one of the few Hamilton retail strips with a continuous run of 1920s and 30s storefronts. Cootes Paradise marsh closes it in to the north, Main Street and Ainslie Wood to the south, Highway 403 to the east, and McMaster's campus sits directly on its western edge — in 1927 the neighbourhood's bankrupt developer, McKittrick Properties, sold 377 acres to the City of Hamilton in a debt settlement, and that land became the site of both the university's campus and the first Royal Botanical Gardens holdings. The houses are mostly detached Craftsman, Tudor Revival and Colonial Revival from the 1920s and 30s on narrow in-city frontages, and with the university next door a large share of them — along with the low-rise apartment blocks near Sterling Street — now run as rentals. The work follows: kitchen and bathroom gut jobs, roof tear-offs and end-of-tenancy clear-outs, mostly at 10 to 14 yards.
Placement is the real constraint. Many of the 1920s houses have only a single-car driveway and some have none, so the bin competes for the same curb the household already parks on, and the blocks closest to Westdale Village and the campus are tightest of all. Expect the City's Temporary Lane and Sidewalk Occupancy Permit to come up far more often here than in Hamilton's newer suburbs, and settle the spot with your operator before delivery day rather than on it. Self-haul is unusually easy by Hamilton standards: the Dundas Community Recycling Centre at 27 Olympic Drive is only about 3 to 4 km away via Cootes Drive and King Street West. Long projects are a local tradition — the Art Deco Westdale Theatre, built in 1935, was bought by the volunteer Westdale Cinema Group in 2017 and reopened on 14 February 2019 after an 18-month restoration, the whole purchase and restoration effort funded by $4.5 million raised from Hamiltonians.

A bin entirely on your own driveway needs no permit — but in Westdale that driveway is often single-width, and on some 1920s lots there is none. When the bin has to sit on the road or across the sidewalk, the City of Hamilton requires a Temporary Lane and Sidewalk Occupancy Permit first: published rates are $63.55 per 14 days for an unrestricted lane occupancy and $137.60 per 14 days for a sidewalk closure. Apply ahead of delivery, confirm current fees with the City, and tell the operator how much curb you actually have.
Questions
More often than in most of Hamilton. If the bin fits on your driveway, no permit is required — but plenty of Westdale houses have a single-car drive or none, and then it goes on the road or over the sidewalk, which needs a City of Hamilton Temporary Lane and Sidewalk Occupancy Permit first ($63.55 per 14 days for an unrestricted lane occupancy, $137.60 per 14 days for a sidewalk closure). Apply before delivery and confirm current fees with the City.
The lot decides as much as the job does. A 10- or 14-yard walk-in bin is the practical maximum on most single-width Westdale drives and covers a kitchen, bathroom or basement reno or a rental turnover; a 20-yard suits a whole-house renovation where there is somewhere to put it. An operator can confirm once they know the street and the access.
