Renting a dumpster in Waterdown? Hamilton's town on the brow of the escarpment splits neatly in two — a small pre-1950s mill village and three decades of new subdivision built around it — and the bin ends up in a different place depending on which one you live in. Quick facts
Waterdown sits at Hamilton's northern edge on the brow of the Niagara Escarpment, roughly 13 km from downtown via Highway 6 and the 403 and close enough to Burlington to commute either way. Its oldest streets are the Smokey Hollow mill hamlet on Grindstone Creek, whose sawmills ran into the 1970s; its newest are the 1990s-to-2020s detached and semi-detached phases spreading out from the Dundas Street East commercial spine. The work splits the same way — worker's cottages and small pre-1950s houses in the core taking kitchens, bathrooms and roof tear-offs at 10 to 14 yards, larger subdivision homes with room for a 20-yard on the drive. More is coming: the approved iConnect redevelopment at Clappison's Corners is clearing the Flamborough Power Centre plaza for a minimum of 2,700 units and as many as 4,500, in buildings from three storeys up to 20-storey towers — Dollarama, Crunch Fitness and Value Village have already relocated to a new plaza on Clappison Avenue, leaving Treasure Hunt as the last holdout on the old site.
Newer Waterdown streets were laid out around double garages and wide driveways, so the bin lands on private property and the City never enters the picture. The village-core streets are the exception — narrower, with some houses close to the sidewalk line — and there a bin can end up on the road, which Hamilton handles through its Temporary Lane and Sidewalk Occupancy Permit. For a small load you would rather haul yourself, the Dundas Community Recycling Centre at 27 Olympic Drive is the closest of the City's three CRCs, about 9 km away via Highway 5 and Governor's Road, with the Kenora CRC a comparable run down Highway 6.

On Waterdown's newer subdivision streets the bin sits on your own driveway and no permit is needed. In the older village core around Smokey Hollow, where frontages are narrower and some houses sit close to the sidewalk, it sometimes has to occupy the road instead — that requires a City of Hamilton Temporary Lane and Sidewalk Occupancy Permit first, published at $63.55 per 14 days for an unrestricted lane occupancy and $137.60 per 14 days for a sidewalk closure. Apply ahead of delivery and confirm current fees with the City.
Questions
Not on a driveway, and most Waterdown houses built since the 1990s have a double-width one, which covers the majority of jobs. If yours is one of the narrow older streets near Smokey Hollow and the bin has to go on the road, the City of Hamilton requires a Temporary Lane and Sidewalk Occupancy Permit first — $63.55 per 14 days for an unrestricted lane occupancy, $137.60 per 14 days if the sidewalk has to close. Confirm current fees with the City.
In the subdivisions a 20-yard sits comfortably on the drive and handles a full renovation or a big clearance, while a 10- or 14-yard is plenty for a single kitchen, bathroom or basement. Village-core houses often take the smaller sizes for the simple reason that there is less room to set one down. Tell the operator the street as well as the job.
